For me, VERDI'S DREAM was the perfect alchemy of the right place (Italy) and the right time (end of WWII) -- my ancestral country during a period that fascinates me. On top of being an absorbing story populated by believable characters (from psychopath to servant), this fine novel feels like an authentic portrayal of the time and place. I can only feel confidence in a story when I know the author has really done the research, and Lisa Kramer Taruschio clearly has. But most important, of course, is the story, which I found authentic and exciting, with visceral moments of tension and terror. For the most part VERDI'S DREAM is a page-turner, though to be fair, in some places I turned the pages more slowly than in others.Product details

Verdi Dream edition by Lisa Kramer Taruschio Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Verdi's Dream is an easy to read, impeccably written story that combines a trio of motifs of love, Italian culture, and historical significance into a satisfying brew. At the center of the plot is a fascinating story that few Americans know about how the O.S.S. (Office of Strategic Services) engineered the secret surrender of German and Italian troops in northern Italy on May 2, 1945, five days before the end of the WWII in the European theater. This novel cleverly and accurately weaves details of the complicated negotiations between the O.S.S., headed by Allen Dulles in Berne, Switzerland, and a high ranking S.S. general, Karl Wolff, in the two months that led up to the surrender. Taruschio deftly illuminates not only the history of this period but brings it to life for us by the vibrancy of her compelling fictional characters. Along the way, Taruschio (a writer and editor with dual American/Italian citizenship, translated the original screenplay for Life is Beautiful from Italian to English) educates an American audience about Italian cooking, music, folk customs, and history. This is a compelling and satisfying book that leads readers to want more from the author.
A stark evocation of Italy at the close of World War II. Mussolini is falling from grace and the Nazis, faced with defeat, are secretly hatching their own personal escape plans. As the Americans negotiate a secret surrender with Italy's Nazi occupiers, an Italian-speaking U.S. operative is parachuted in to calm a fractious band of Italian partisans hidden in the woods.
Author Lisa Kramer Taruschio tells a riveting tale, deftly depicting the confusion, deprivations, and fears of a nation on the verge of moral and political collapse. The book gives an insightful glimpse into the Italian mentality, along with the most intimate thoughts of a spectrum of characters high-ranking and lowly, women and men. An exceptionally subtle portrait of a Nazi intellectual trapped in a maze of conflicting loyalties. The ending drifted a bit, hence the 4 stars. But the details are blushingly authentic. A moving, edifying read.
The book is a bit tedious. I only read half the book and then abandoned it! The stroy line was really slow.
The earlier reviewer provides a nice summary of the plot of Verdi's Dream, but beyond that, I am wondering if we read the same book. I found it to be so slow paced that I was bored. The writing style was not to my taste---too many long, long sentences---the only pupose of which seemed to be how many descriptive phrases could be included in one sentence. There was not enough dialog and plot action for me, which was extremely disappointing. I love historical fiction and have read extensively about WWII, so I was looking forward to this book with great anticipation.
I was also bothered by the formatting issues in the edition as I was reading. I only read books that are available for , so I am use to minor formatting issues that are part of most e-books. However, Verdi's Dream contained so many errors, it really hindered the flow of my reading. These errors consisted mostly of hyphens in the middle of words where they shouldn't be---ugh!!!
For those of you who like plenty of descriptive language and narrative, rather than dialog and a fast moving plot, I think you will enjoy this book. It just wasn't for me.
Absolutely brilliant author. Her gift of descriptive verbiage is remarkable. Her portrayal of characterers, both actual and fiction was engaging. I loved this novel from the first to the last sentence and found it a wealth of information regarding "Operation Sunrise".
The story concept was very interesting. The writing style lacks energy, and the story plods. There is too much background material and repetition of background that was annoying. Book would benefit from better editing.
Verdi's Dream explores a little-known piece of WWII history through compelling characters and fluid, graceful writing. The real-life characters--Allen Dulles in particular--are well-drawn, full of identifiable quirks, and show the results of wide-ranging research, as well as a grasp of human flaws and character. The plot revolves around both an historical episode--the clandestine negotiations toward the independent surrender of Italy--and a series of interactions between Italian partisan fighters and the Italian-American agent in their midst. The love story at the center is pleasingly rendered, but for me, even more interesting were the relationships among the partisans themselves, each of whom reflected not only an individual personality but also the characteristics of their various home regions of Italy. The author's familiarity with history and with regional Italy is clear and striking throughout. I really enjoyed this book!
